New Properties of Traditional Medicine Agent
Honokiol and Magnolol
Magnolia tree bark extract has been used for thousands of years in Chinese and Japanese traditional medical practice, with apparently little toxicity. A study conducted at Dana Farber has established that Honokiol has selective cytotoxic properties against B-CLL cells. The dosage required for anti-CLL activity will probably be higher than that used in traditional medicine and human clinical trials in CLL have yet to be conducted. However, the characteristics of this agent are attractive. Read all about it in Honokiol. (10/9/05)

Omega-3 Fatty Acids
A Fishy Tale
Much current research is focused on the role played by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in a very broad range of cellular functions in humans. Our modern diet and agricultural technology have created a substantial imbalance between the two major groups PUFAs that we consume. Restoring that balance is critical to our ability to avoid and fight cancer and other diseases. In Omega-3 Fatty Acids we review current scientific thought on the importance of increasing our consumption of Omega-3 oils, derived mainly from fish. (1/23/05)

Cancer Prevention Strategies
In this article, Dr. Judith Fisher looks at a range of agents and supplements that are reputed to have chemopreventive properties, agents that could help ward off cancer before it even gains a toehold. To learn more, read Cancer Prevention Strategies. (10/5/03)
Beta Glucan as Immunomodulator
Make Like a Yeast Cell
Beta Glucan, Complement and Rituxan
Beta Glucan, a polysaccharide derived from yeast, mushrooms and other plant sources, has shown activity as an immunomodulator when used as a single agent and early stage research shows synergy with Rituxan through improved activation of complement. This orally available agent shows promise in cancer therapy. To see how it applies to CLL, read our review, Beta Glucan, Complement and Rituxan. (1/23/03)

Cellular Starvation in the Midst of Plenty
Cancer and Sugar Metabolism
Cancer cells are greedy consumers of sugar. They metabolize inefficiently and produce a high level of waste. In the process, they starve your regular tissues of much needed nutrition. In Cancer and Sugar Metabolism we examine these phenomena deriving from high tumor load. (4/14/02)
